I'm looking to buy an S10 in the very near future. Just wondering if there are some things I should look for when inspecting one. The main one I will be looking at is a 97 with a 4.3 with a 5 speed. What kind of mileage could I expect with this truck? Thanks for any info.

17-20mpg, intake gaskets are common and ball joints.

rest of the truck should be fine.

Ick. I would strongly advise to not get it. I had that exact vehicle but in a Blazer form. I had NOTHING but problems with it. Intake gaskets, fuel pump, a/c compressor, blower motor, ball joints, swarbar links, rear diff. bearings, transmission...ect. This truck was a piece of shit from the word, GO! It's your choice, Sir. I may have just had a lemon of a truck. Good luck to you, if you decide to purchase one.

Injector anyone....

They are pretty terrible vehicles. For the mileage they get and the number of repairs needed you could bite the mileage bullet and just get a fullsize instead and drastically reduce the number of repairs. I have not known anyone that has had one that would go out and buy another... if that is any indication.

I to had a 95 Jimmy and they are a light little crappy truck, ball joints, EGR, Injector etc... Get a full size Tahoe or LS truck, WAAAAAY better durability wise.

Thanks for all the info guys. I kind of figured it would be a repair nightmare. Theres a 92 toyota I'm looking at too. I used to have one of them, and beat the piss out of it with 295k+ and never touched anything on it. So I might go that route again. There's a cheap 1st gen 2.5 4 banger s10 with 90k too, are they any better than the newer ones?

I had a 99 s-10 pickup I bought with 900 miles on it. Had a 4 cyl and a 5 speed and made the following repairs in the 150K miles I had it

New front shocks. New outer tie rods
ball joint on pas side only. The shock leaked and it beat the crap out of the front suspension.

I had to replace the cat.
I had to replace the rear driveshaft u joint.

Not bad considering I beat the living piss out of the truck. I worked it hard.

I had two different 93 blazers with the 4.3 and had leaking FPR and anti lock brake issues on both. One had a flakey transfer case control.

i had a '95 Jimmy 2dr and a '97 Blazer 4 door. I had issues with the '95 and it had a blower motor go out, EGR, Fuel pump and sending unit, Catalytic converter went and muffler(just rusted out), waterpump, brake pads, and the 4wd actuator. It was a nice ride but just had alot of issues. When i sold it i think the rear end was starting to howl a little although that's not 100%. Could have been the tires. That truck i bought with 115k miles and sold at 190k. It looked like it had 50k on it. The '97 i had was PERFECT. i bought it almost mint with 90k miles and sold with 125k and it went to the east coast twice and to atlanta and got 22-23 mpg highway and never had to make a repair on it. The person before me didn't either. It was a solid ride. My '95 got 15-17 mpg AT BEST. I also would look for a full size instead. they get 17 mpg or so but are FAR more reliable and are more versitile and can actually TOW something if you need to

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the leaky front covers, oil cooler lines, and power steering pump shaft seal considering how often those go out. I would definitely stay away from one if you have the choice. The 4cyl ones do seem to have a lot less problems though.:dunno:

I'm thinking about that 91 a little more seriously. I only have 2k to spend really, the 91 s10 is 1300 vs 2000 for a toyota pickup. Both reg cab short box 5 speed 2wd's. The s10 has 90k original miles, fresh $2400 said tune up. The toy has a rebuilt 22re with 200k on the body, clean interior. Think the S10 would be alright? Hows that iron duke for reliability? Power will suck, but it will get me down the road.
