so the other day my truck started making a weird noise coming from the tranny area. its a 89 ranger with a 4.0 and a m50d mazda 5 speed. its the kinda sound that sounds like clutch shatter but you only hear it when its in gear and moving. its gotten louder the last couple days and i dunno what it could be.

you can hear it when its in 1st and 2nd pretty loud but when its in 3rd and 4th its not as bad. and if i push in the clutch in and throw it in neutral you'll hear the noise wind down? what could this be? do i need to pull it apart to figure it out or what
you can also hear it when the clutch is out and the truck is in neutral. rev it up and the sound is louder and quicker

Sounds like an input shaft bearing.
Check your fluid level. A manual can make some strange noises with low fluid. People generally neglect to check the tranny fluid level.

Maybe he should learn how to drive?

Yeah your first problem is its an 89 ranger! :ohnoes:

I agree with 406GTA, sounds like a bearing whine just dont know which one. Shop for another beater and drive this one until it blows a hole through the case. :durka:

you dont think it could be a throw-out bearing? it goes away when i push the clutch in but whenever the clutch is engaged you can hear it

In the end to fix it, it will be more that the truck is worth.

If Im thinking right, the throw out bearing is spinning when you have your foot on the clutch pedal. Its ilde when your in gear or neutral.

Since you said its louder in 1st and 2nd, Im guessing that 1st and 2nd gears are on a common shaft from the others and that shaft has the bad bearing. I dont know transmissions that well and especially dont know mazdas.

Throw out bearings spin all the time. They typically make noise while in neutral, and the noise goes away with your foot on the clutch pedal. This is because the bearing is loaded and tight while your foot is on the pedal.

Input shaft bearings make noise in neutral and in gear. It could easily be something else. I feel it is something inside the tranny. Drive it till it breaks and junk it.
