View Full Version : LS7 69 Camaro

I didn't want to hijack that other thread, so I'll start a new one.

In short, I was hired to oversee and manage a 69 Camaro project - draw up the original budget and project outline, find the car, broker the deal, hire the shop, select the parts, etc. The only decisions that the owner has made is the color of the paint and the style of Fikse wheels. He wanted a car like mine, but had no idea what to do and didn't want to get taken.

I have the complete details and the whole build documented here if anyone is interested:

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=15999

The crappy part is that the car should be finished before winter is over, so I doubt I'll get to drive it locally.

The LS7 should be going on the engine dyno this week. It started out as a crate motor and did a cam swap and new springs and retainers. The cam is the same Katech cam that I have in my car. We're using a BS3 computer since we can't use the throttle by wire.

Jason at Katech said he thinks it will make 645hp. We'll see about that. I'm sure it will make 600, but 645 seems a bit optimistic.

http://www.autokraft.org/gallery/hayim/album/images/0075.jpg

The car was an original paint survivor, but had a bit of rust, so it was put on a rotisserie so it could get NOS quarters, outer and inner wheel tubs, as well as the modifications for the rear suspension and in-floor SFC's. Then it was media blasted.

That would be great doing something you enjoy and getting something for it as well.
He couldn't have picked a better guy to do it either. :thumb:

Are you going to be able to get pictures of the two together?

That would be really cool, Terry, but I doubt it. Just bad timing. I hate winter. lol

That is just not fair. I want money to be able to do something a quarter as good as that. Hell I have a car in the garage that cannot even get brakes put on due to having no money.

Nothing too crazy, just an updated dash with Auto Meter gauges and modern seats with black and white houndstooth and original deluxe door panels.

Makes a guy wonder what kind of budget you need to even begin considering this. Sweet looking car!

That inake is BEAuuuutiiiifffullll!! I was looking on the Kinsler website at some of there pics and notices that each runner has a quick disconnect fitting on the bottom. I am assuming that is so you can run them all into a source for your MAP sensor? My Dad was kicking around the idea of an Tunnel ram or stacked IR LS setup for his '55 and I was wondering how to get a decent vacuum signal.

Hey XcYZ it looks absolutly amazing! Saw you're in somewhat close talking with Katech. Did anything ever come up about a previous customers LS7 issues? The guys been posting videos on streetfire.net about his problems.

Damn, another dream machine being built. And like Carl said that intake is an awesome piece of hardware.

Scott if you want pictures done I would be more then happy to do them if the opportunity presents its self.

Yep, exactly, all the runners get tied together for the MAP. I agree, it's a stunning piece. I had Kinsler annodize all the linkages black. They had never done before, but they love the look as much as I do.

I've talked to them on the phone, e-mail, and talked to Jason in person when I was in Detroit last, but that's about it. They are aware of the project and are interested in the dyno results, too.

If you want to take some build shots, I'll be heading back to Autokraft (which is in Eau Claire) on a Saturday morning in a week or two to see the latest progress on the car and to pick up my hood and chin spoiler. I'm having Kurt spray the bottom of the hood and chin spoiler with flat clear to make the carbon fiber stand out better.

Scott please keep everyone up to date with dyno results, issues, etc. I would love to see how the MAP sensor routing and layout finishes up on the engine. I have my Dad seriously thinking about doing a big cube IR setup now and want to push him to get it done.

Also if you don't mind some company I would love to get out and see the car in person.

Thanks,

Yep, same blank that I started with, but I cut my holes in a different pattern since I didn't have to worry about A/C controls. :thumb:

I think it will just be a toy for him as he owns several Ferrari dealerships in NYC and Florida. A few Mercedes dealerships, too.

Is that going to be a 3 link then? Torque Arm going in at some point?

XcYZ
02-23-2009, 10:49 AM
It's a 5 link... or 4 link with panhard... people call it different things. It's the same rear suspension setup that I'm running in my car. I think it works great.

I'm really starting to get some deja vu. Looks A LOT like your car in a different color scheme. (even the wheels)

You really should try to get some pictures with both cars together this spring. That would look amazing:)

I really hoped that would happen, but it's looking like the car will be finished in about a month and then will be shipped back to NYC.

Yep, my car and this one are extremely similar. That's what the owner wanted, though.

I was confused since you can't see the upper control arms in all the pics on here...

http://www.autokraft.org/gallery/hayim/album/images/0221.jpg

But this picture shows the upper control arm mounting points on the rear axle... I get it now.

02-23-2009, 06:44 PM
Yep, you got it, Matt. They're hard to see because of the pockets that they fit into in the body.

Here's the dyno sheet.... Katech thought it would make close to 650hp with their cam and the Kinsler IR intake, but it made slightly more.

This cam sacrifices extreme top end pull to make mid-range torque, and does it ever. The torque numbers are awesome, and look how the motor just shuts off after making peak hp at 6200.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this thread.

Camaro Performers did a photoshoot on it last week before it was shipped to New York. It turned out awesome and the owner is beyond thrilled with the car. Now that the Camaro is done, the owner wants to do a 65 or 66 GTO with an LS7, 6 speed, modern brakes, suspension, etc, etc. Kurt is on the hunt for a survivor right now.

Here's a shot of the car when they were setting up for part of the photoshoot. The chin spoiler is off in this pic...

Oh yeah, and Kurt is who did the cage in Don's car. He does incredible work. :thumb:

Thanks! On a related note, here's a lame video I took of the throttle body linkage. That intake is a work of art. Kinsler had never done linkages in black anodize before I asked them to do it to this one. I think it looks awesome, but I'm biased towards black hose and fittings.
